Twilight Breaking Dawn

Intro

Ah yes, the Twilight Saga - loved by many, loathed by that many more. Just in case you were asleep from 2005 - 2012, the Twilight series started as four books written by then-first-time author Stephenie Meyer. The story follows Bella Swan, who moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, where she discovers (spoiler alert lol) a coven of vampires - who then proceed to cause a ton of drama for themselves and everybody else. In addition to the books, there was a massively successful movie series with five installments, starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward. If this is all new info to you and it sounds like something you’d be into, I'd recommend staying away from this page for now - it's gonna contain a lot of spoilers!

If you're sitting there right now like, "omg ew Twilight, why lol," I'm not gonna try to change your mind. There are plenty of people who feel that way, and I've heard justifiable reasons. For me, though, it's just something that was a big part of my childhood - reading the books, getting so hyped for the movies to come out, and being engaged in the nearly ubiquitous fandom. You know how people say, "oh, I miss when Pokemon Go was big and the whole world was playing, it brought us together"? This was kinda like that for me, except the thing that brought us together was debating Team Edward vs. Team Jacob.

As I grew up and the franchise quieted down, I honestly kinda forgot about Twilight. Then, one slow afternoon, I threw the movies on for a dose of nostalgia, not expecting to fall back in love with the series so hard. Yes, it has some INCREDIBLY goofy, cringey moments, but watching again as an adult - someone who’s now experienced interpersonal conflicts, loss, and difficult life decisions - I found myself getting some things a lot more. Like, I could see why characters felt compelled to make certain choices, even when they were messy or irrational. Is there better drama media out there that scratches that itch? Yeah, I'm sure. But this one has vampires, a peak '00s aesthetic, and it’s my page, so whatevs!

For the Twihards, ratties, and other fans in the room - this is for you, and I hope you enjoy!

Fun Facts! Did You Know...?

  • There is a Twilight theme park located on Hengqin Island, Guangdong Province, China! Yes, for real. As a land part of the greater Lionsgate Entertainment World, this area of the park features two Twilight attractions: The Twilight Saga: Midnight Ride, "an exciting group VR experience that sees visitors mount motorcycles to join Jacob Black and his wolfpack in a journey through the forest to hunt down newborn vampires" (source), and The Twilight Saga: Bella's Journey, where "riders encounter digital doubles of a number of their favourite characters created in CG and realised using the latest in high-quality projection." (source) (Basically, it's a dark ride that traverses a physical track, whereas the other attraction is a motion simulator.) I could do a whole page on this topic, but there is already a wonderfully comprehensive deep dive on Youtube by Mike From The Party, which you can watch here: Why is there a Twilight Theme Park?

  • Aro's infamous laugh during Break Dawn: Part 2 - possibly more shocking than anything else that happens in that scene. Actor Michael Sheen has said that of the multiple takes of this line, the one chosen for the film was "probably the most subtle, toned-down version" of what was filmed on set - which is surprising, if you've ever heard it.
